Down Syndrome (DS) is one of the most easily identified genetic conditions. Though early intervention and rehabilitation during childhood is the usual practice, holistic rehabilitation of individuals remains a challenge in adulthood. At The Neuroaid and Research Foundation (NRF) (www.neuroaid.in), a multidisciplinary team comprising a Developmental Paediatrician, Occupational Therapist (OT), Physiotherapist (PT), Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), Child Guidance Counsellor (CGC), Psychologist, and Special Educator—work collaboratively to achieve functional independence in persons with DS.
This year, NRF observed World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March with a whole lot of activities in an attempt to bring forth the various challenges that persons with Down Syndrome face on a day-to-day basis. The team of NRF came together to record the very first Podcast under the banner of NEUROCONNECT -NRF’s social media handle on the outreach endeavours. The two-part podcast was conceptualized, coordinated, filmed, edited, and showcased on all social media platforms including a launch on Spotify by Dr Akshay Kumar Joshi, Senior OT with the support of Ms. Mihika Mittal, Child Guidance Counsellor.
An article emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach was put together by the professional team of NRF and for the first time found its’ way on the Times of India Blog where it was posted.
Persons with Down Syndrome are very friendly and live life to the fullest. To celebrate their vibrant spirit, NRF hosted (yet again a first) an Online Talent Hunt Search for all Persons with Down Syndrome. The competition required that the participants upload their video on Instagram. The winners were finalized on the number of likes that each could garner.
NRF reached out to various organizations, parent support groups, and individuals to on social media platforms and through emails to motivate them to participate. All performances were deeply appreciated. Results were declared on 21 March. E-certificates, a prize, and free consultation with one of the NRF professionals at any of the 4 centers in Delhi-NCR were offered to all 6 participants. An Instagram Live Event was also organized to highlight the efforts of all our participants. Parents too participated actively and proactively.
A fun-filled day was planned for the participants when they visited the Center. A special congratulatory message was shared to culminate the day.
